Meet Laura and Craig! The dynamic duo behind Loop. A local yarn shop that has been a staple of the Graduate Hospital neighborhood for over a decade.

Bio

Meet Laura! Laura grew up in New England and attended college in Baltimore where she studied painting. After school, she moved to Philadelphia to work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Laura had only planned to stay for a short time, but Philadelphia won her over with its big city vibe in a smaller, more livable package. So, she happily stayed. Laura learned to knit in 2004 and became completely obsessed. Her obsession became her career in 2005 with the opening of Loop.

Meet Craig! Craig grew up in the western suburbs, moved to Center City when he started at Temple University, and he’s been here ever since. He worked for several independent retailers in college and having his own shop was often on his mind. So, in 2005 he took the plunge. He lives in Loop’s Graduate Hospital neighborhood and loves all the big city fun that Philadelphia has to offer and the small-town feel of his neighborhood.

Origin Story

Craig learned to knit when a friend gave him a ball of yarn and a pair of needles for his birthday. He had never thought about knitting and wasn’t particularly excited that his friend wanted to start the lesson at that very moment, “but it turned out to be life-changing”.

Craig spend the next few years knitting and learning about yarn. He was feeling like he needed a career change, and opening up a yarn shop seemed the natural thing to do. He figured he’d give it 5 years and if it didn’t work at least he tried.

Laura had meanwhile fallen in love with knitting herself and saw that Craig was looking for help. She jumped at the opportunity. They opened Loop and have been happily knitting and building their yarn community ever since.

Roses and Thorns

“The best and worst parts of owning a business are the same. You get to make all the decisions, but you have to make all the decisions. When things go wrong, you have no one to blame; but when things go well, it’s incredibly gratifying.”
